Hannah Williams and Whitney Holman were once at-risk of dropping out of high school. Now, they are heading to college and beginning a lifetime of believing they can achieve what they are willing to work for.
Through their determination — and the foresight of Limestone County school officials who brought the Ombudsman Educational Services program here three years ago — Williams, Holman and 37 other at-risk classmates earned their high school diplomas here Tuesday night.

Marilyn Serrano has a message for teenage girls who become pregnant and have to drop out of school. “Don’t give up,” said the Madison teenager who dropped out of East Limestone High School two years ago to take care of her newborn girl, Nevaeh Anabel Cantaneta. Serrano earned her high school diploma in May with help fr...om the Ombudsman program at Limestone County Schools. Superintendent Barry Carroll said the assistant principals heard a presentation about the Ombudsman last week that highlighted one of Limestone's students, Marylin Serrano. Serrano's story was featured in a bulletin published by America's Promise Alliance, a children's advocacy group founded in 1997 with General Colin Powell as chairman. In the story, Serrano tells of her struggles as a teen mom.

Ombudsman, an America’s Promise partner, works with school districts to provide at-risk students with an alternate route to earn their high school diploma. Most of the students who attend the more than 100 Ombudsman learning centers throughout the country are at risk of dropping out due to issues with attendance, credits or academic skills, or adult responsibilities that hinder their success in a traditional classroom setting.

A dropout-prevention program in Limestone County changed the lives of 27 children this past year. Without it, they never would have graduated with high school diplomas. The Ombudsman program has increased the school system’s graduation rate by 5 percent in just one year, said Donna Morris, Limestone County PASS coordinator. The success at Limestone — the first school system in the state to try the program — has caught the attention of state education officials and other schools.
