Effingham County’s alternative school has proven to be a successful option for a number of at-risk students in the county, according to an administrator of the school. John Wacha, an assistant vice president with Ombudsman Educational Services, told the Effingham County Board of Education on Wednesday that Effingham’s Ombudsman Center has had a 100 percent graduation rate in each of the past two years.

A new education program is underway in Valdosta to help at-risk students get on the right track. The school system is partnering with a private company called Ombudsman Educational Services to make sure struggling students graduate. It's not your average school setting, students arrive for one of the three daily sessions and learn for four hours each. Two sessions are in the morning for middle schoolers and one at night for high schoolers. Valdosta City School leaders say this is the first time they've had a program like this.

The Ombudsman Program — the Valdosta City School System’s solution to alternative education — held its first day of classes in its own facility on Monday. At the May 14 Valdosta Board of Education meeting, the board voted to enter into a partnership with Ombudsman for the 2012-2013 school year.

Valdosta City Schools is partnering with Ombudsman Educational Services to open the Ombudsman Valdosta Learning Center, which will offer a highly personalized, technology-rich blended learning program for middle and high school students who have not been successful in traditional school programs, who are at risk of dropping out, who wish to recover credits to advance with their classmates, or who have adult responsibilities and would benefit from a flexible schedule.

The Newton County School System hopes to produce more graduates with its new alternative school program.
Samantha Fuhrey, executive director of Secondary Education at NCSS, recently informed the Newton County Board of Education that system officials are identifying more high school dropouts and those at risk for not graduating and trying to encourage them to enroll in the Ombudsman program.

Newton County School System's alternative education program finally has a permanent location. Ombudsman, the private company being used by NCSS this year to run its alternative program, moved into its stand-alone building on the Bypass Road after waiting for months to find a location. "The staff did a wonderful job finalizing the move on Saturday and Sunday," said John Wacha, assistant vice president of Center Operations for Ombudsman.

A program in Glynn County does more than keep 17-year-old Josh Crum on schedule to graduate from high school.
Ombudsman, a national dropout prevention program that also helps students make up missed graduation credits, prevents him from getting into trouble, he says.
The Glynn County school system has retained the program to provide students an alternate route to graduation.
