Effingham County’s alternative school has proven to be a successful option for a number of at-risk students in the county, according to an administrator of the school. John Wacha, an assistant vice president with Ombudsman Educational Services, told the Effingham County Board of Education on Wednesday that Effingham’s Ombudsman Center has had a 100 percent graduation rate in each of the past two years.

Kenny Veopraseuth was worried. In his junior year at DeKalb High School, Veopraseuth knew he wouldn’t have enough credits in a year to graduate. A night owl by nature, he had a hard time concentrating early in the day, and his schoolwork suffered for it.
“I wouldn’t have dropped out,” said Veopraseuth, now a 19-year-old senior scheduled to graduate in June. “I want to make my parents proud. But I had to do something because I knew I wouldn’t graduate, and I’d rather have my diploma than a GED.”

Twenty former at-risk students received their high school diplomas today as they graduated from the Ombudsman Educational Services. The group partners with the East Allen County Schools to provide a one-on-one style of teaching. Ombudsman director Heather Jauregui calls their approach more individualized. She says many of the students did not believe they had the ability to succeed.

Cody Schmitt used to hate school. A year-and-a-half ago, before attending Ombudsman Learning Center in DeKalb, he didn’t see himself graduating, let alone going to college. After completing courses through the alternative learning school, he’ll not only graduate with the DeKalb High School class of 2011, but he’s also pursuing a degree in criminal justice at Kishwaukee College. “It saved my life,” he said.
